Water them. They just don't have good tolerance for cooling the soil down. And they sure don't have much push. The blank spots will give you weed issues otherwise. They won't set any brace roots or anything like corn. The stem may throw some roots out, but that's usually if a wire worm, corn root worm or something eats on it a little.

If you got pretty aggressive with pre emerge chemicals you may see some yellowing from watering them. That's probably why people don't like watering them up. But your soil type tolerates chemicals good.
