Subject: RE: How Crop Insurance Fuels BTO's

Right on Ben.

I've spent a lot of time pondering the farm program and what it offers now and if it's even worth it. Especially here where it's tied to conservation compliance and you get kicked out if you drain a 1/2 acre slough that you weren't supposed to. I explain this ridiculous rule to outsiders as, "Us farmers have to maintain these ponds for the ducks. If we drain the ponds some of the ducks might die. It is really important the ducks live here so they can get shot by someone else! We are not supposed to be the ones responsible for the possible death of a duck!"

But seriously, if the entire farm bill went away and no crop insurance were available it would put the pinch on a lot of people not just farmers:

- A lot less corn would be raised, people would switch to the lowest input crops, bin run off patent soybeans, the drop in corn acres would probably kill the ethanol movement, also causing livestock feed to rise, in turn increasing food costs at the grocery store. Farmers would learn to survive like they always have. But it would be a lose lose lose for many people outside of just farmers. Production would decrease because farmers would be less willing to throw inputs out there without a safety net.
