We routinely rip about 22 to 24 inches deep.  The tool of preference here is an R and R machine.  It will go a little deeper than that if you take out the stops, but power requirements go way up any deeper than that.  We figure about 80 horsepower per shank.  Dole uses a Komatsu crawler about the size of a D8 with a single ripper shank on the back.  They go a full 24 to 26, and it takes a long time to get a field done.
