NE CO | Thanks for the helpful information on my auger problems. The electrician was out today and explained my setup to me in detail. As suggested, the auger is well protected with an 80 amp breaker in the power panel, followed by 80 amp fuses in the disconnect box where the auger plugs in, and finally, it is protected by heaters in the auger control box mounted on the auger.
I have retensioned the truss cables on the auger to remove a small bend near the top of the auger. The real problem though, was mice which had somehow gotten into the motor and into the connection box on the motor. It was packed with grain, droppings, and whatever else could be stuffed in. Most windings were shorted to ground, so the motor is waiting to be rewound. A new motor is installed and will be inspected annually for mouse damage, though I don't see how they could gain access.
Again, many thanks for the information. An expensive lesson today ($1100 for the new motor), but I have a better understanding of my system. | |
