But RIM had to spend $380 million in advertising to counter the iPhone and maintain that level of sales. That's a LOT of money that could have been added to their bottom line.

Don't get me wrong - I wish RIM no ill. Competition is good - for us. I just find stuff like this a bit comical since prior to the iPhone release, the likes of RIM and MS were saying there was nothing to worry about - the iPhone is a toy. NEVER underestimate your competition!
