Subject: Missing Some Things In XP OS

I'm not exactly computer illiterate, but I don't know a lot about them. I have a 6 year old E-Machine computer with XP OS with SP-2. I kept it tuned up and really liked it. I was on dial up for years. I finally decided to go with Charter high speed cable with an external Scientific Atlanta modem model 2100, but it seemed kind of slow and my computer was full of junk, so I made backup disk and ran my XP recovery disk through it to start all over. Now I can't get on Internet at all. The device manager says the modem don't have a driver and it can't be renewed unless I'm on the internet. It also shows that I don't have a Network Adapter. I've called Charter and they said to call E-machines. I did and they said they don't support anything over 2 years old. I bought this new computer with Vista on it, but would rather have my old one with XP. Short of taking it to a shop, anyone have any ideas where my stuff went and maybe what to do? Thanks.
