Subject: RE: Flushing cooling systems and additive

So. IL
Generally speaking SCA's (Supplemental Coolant Additives) will do very little to dissolve and/or dislodge rust, scale and other remnants of cooling system neglect. That is the purpose of the coolant system flushing products however one must be careful here as anything that is aggressive enough to dissolve years of scale can also damage copper and aluminum surfaces.

Adding SCA's to machines which already have scale, corrosion and cavitation damage will not hurt but one should not be count on the additive to prevent leaks going forward as the damage has already been done. SCA's will not repair damaged coolant surfaces nor will it penetrate existing scale and deposits to protect and prevent further pitting and corrosion from occcuring.

SCA's contain chemistry to adjust the pH of the coolant, inhibit corrosion, prevent scale from forming and stop cavitation damage.

Here are a couple links to more information on the subject:

Antifreeze that is sold for heavy duty diesel applications generally already contain SCA's. If you've already added a standard antifreeze without SCA's you can purchase the additive from your local John Deere dealer.
