Subject: RE: Seeding Cover Crops at Sidedressing- 12 row rig

SE PA
Penn State University has been testing this for 5 years now. Of the dozens of replicated trials there is no yield loss. That doesn't mean some trials didn't have a yield loss but the avg was clearly net positive- usually around 5-7 bushels. Still don't understand why as you'd think there would be a loss. I've done replicated testing here on my farm in SE PA and have an even better result avg nearly 10 yield increase. But part of that may be due to a significant percentage of my hybrids being shorter season. Between Ontario, Quebec, PA and NY state i know of well over 10,000 acres that were interseeded last year. Others on AgTalk are trying it. All indications are that number will be higher next year. The biggest challenge is high yielding long season corn hybrids. It is what my research will focus on in 2016. It is recommended to start with your lower yielding fields first. Besides, that probably where you need covers the most anyway.
