Again, there is going to be a similar RTK Network in Iowa as there is in Minnesota. These stations are actually different than the stations in Minnesota. The Iowa stations are Leica stations, not Trimble stations. They are owned and operated by the state of Iowa Department of Transportation. They both do the same thing. They are being placed (one per county or so) throughout Iowa. They are not officially up and running yet. Supposedly they will be by fall of 2008 but no one can guarantee that. These stations are all calculating corrections but they are not transmitting the corrections over the air waves. They are certainly more than 6-8 miles apart. Typically more than 20 miles. What they do is they hook them all together and feed the information through the Internet to a mainframe server. The mainframe then creates a "GUESS" at what the actual correction of the GPS signal could be and offers it up as a corrected signal through the Internet. (Anyone ever waited for a picture to download from the web). This system sends information through the web twice therefore slowing the whole process of getting accurate correction information direct to the tractor. There is a reason that Deere, Leica, Trimble, Outback, and all other agricultural equipment providers all use radios that are limited in broadcast range. The closer you are to a Reference Station, the more accurate the signal is going to be. The faster you can calculate the correction and deliver that correction to the rover, the more accurate the signal will be. Those are the facts.
