Camrose, Alberta | We dry wheat every year, anywhere from 15.0-20% down to 14.5%. We have a contiunous flow dryer and run the heat at 140-180 F. If its poor quality wheat (feed) we run up to 200 F, running this high of heat on milling quality wheat makes poor bread and can cause what looks like bran frost.
I would never try to dry grain without heat, it takes too long and I think it costs you more in the end anyway. A neighbor told me last year he airated wheat for about a month and figured it cost him at least $0.15/bu for power. Last year our costs for drying were about 4.5 cents per bushel for natural gas and 0.5 cents per bushel for power (electric augers, blower fan, cooling fans). Of all the peices of machinery on our farm, the grain dryier has paid for itself the most times over. I wouldn't farm without one and I don't understand why more guys don't have one. | |
