I agree with Jon too. You need the restriction of the thermostat in the cooling system to control coolant flow. Unrestricted the pump can pump more coolant than the radiator can handle. Had an old Ford flathead years ago that did not have a pressurized cooling system and two water pumps and removing the 'stats caused it to push coolant out the overflow.
