Hate to break it to you Mark. No snakes in the area of the calf. Need to hit the lower country to find them. And I know of horses that got bit in the leg by rattlers and caused massive swelling around the bite as first sign and they were visibly in duress for quite a while first. Doesn't quite fit this scenario.
