Frederick, Md | We did a loafing barn, back then that was what they call a pack barn. In all honesty I hated it. More labor intensive, dirty cows, higher scc count, in the spring more labor for hauling manure. The list goes on for me. We used to shake up straw by hand. Add mashed tits to the list as well.
That all said we bought a straw chopper for our final few years. I believe you could stir the chopped straw without much issue. And also the cows always looked happy in there.
