Northern Minnesota | If possible, better to vaccinate the calves and put them back with the cows for at least two weeks. Then wean. This is because the stress of weaning -even fenceline weaning- depresses the immune response to the vaccine, which is counterproductive to what we are trying to achieve by vaccinating.
When the vaccinated calf can leave the chute and go directly back to mom there is no significant stress and their bodies can do a more efficient job of responding to the vaccine i.e. seroconvert (or develop antibodies). |
