I have noticed with one auction company (might be Steffes out of Fargo) there is a running log of the bidders numbers and their bids that you can look at. It gives you confirmation that you are bidding against someone real. Obviously, a crooked auction company could make up numbers and bids but if that was ever proven their integrity would be history.
