I know a couple of young guys working in ND and they work 16-18 hours a day, 7 on and then 2 off. No time for anything else and their employers do not hire part timers.


Yeah, I've known a lot of oil patch workers, & part-time is not in the vocabulary...out of all those guys, there's one old fart who was smart & tough enough to hang on to some money, he's about 80, was a driller all his working life, has the missing fingers to prove it, & started farming & running race horses when he retired. Bought & sold several farms, & he's comfortable...The norm, unfortunately, is to make the big bucks, blow it on toys & partying, then when the patch slows down, everything's gone, including the marriage...sounds cynical, I know, but that's what I've seen happen...if you're smart about it, you can come out ahead, but a lot don't...
