south east Indiana
The algae needs nitrogen to grow so if add a sorce a carbon to scavenege the nitrogen it can't grow. That is why the barley straw works, also heard wood chips work.

I have used gold fish when I had large tanks in SD. They did great and even bred in the tank. Caught the babies in a net and gave them to friends after my tanks all were 'stocked'. They will get big, it is kinda cool to see them out there. If the tank has an overflow have to cover it with a screen or something so you don't loose the fish
