There are some storm chasers that are in it for the video footage but there are a lot that are performing scientific research.  High definition video when replayed at slow speeds when cross referenced with wind speeds from radar along with air temperatures and air pressures allow scientists to better understand how these other factors effect how tornado's act and thus results in better forecasting.
