The steam that used to run the engine had steam cylinder oil with it. All engines have a dripper on them to add oil to the steam going in. It's a heavy oil that disperses with the temp of the steam. It's also used in gearboxes today.

You might be able to use the same dripper on the engine with something like Marvel Mystery Oil or other pneumatic oils used with compressed air.

The steam doesn't lubricate the cylinder, the steam cylinder oil does.
