I'm a Vietnam vet and although I've never had a problem with the VA healthcare system, I still advocate doing away with the whole VA system and relying on our regular healthcare hospitals and clinics to treat vets. It would be much more efficient and less wasteful. For instance, I have to drive over 100 miles to the VA clinic, whereas a local hospital/clinic is only 18 miles and I'm sure the small rural hospitals could use the extra money for treating vets. The argument has been made that regular healthcare facilities don't have the expertise to deal with the specialized care needed by the veteran, but I think that if that were the case in a few instances, the local clinic could refer the patient to other specialists just like they do with non-veterans.

The problem is that whenever the word "Veteran" is mentioned, the public has an emotional reaction to it and is willing to spend limitless amounts of money in order to satisfy their sympathetic response. That's why there are very few veterans organizations (that ask for money) in this country that aren't scams and that's why the VA has been able to build up it's bureaucracy to such an extent without actually helping the veteran. Money just flows in without any oversight.
