western iowa | I was out picking up some alfalfa and grass seed the other day from our seed supplier and we had a discussion about what to plant into a rye field after we chopped the rye off it in the next few weeks. He told me a story about him seeding rye in a waterway in the fall and comming back in the spring with and reseeding with brome . He said he could never get the brome or any other grass to grow on it. He said he tried it for two years and then called his supplier and they told him rye puts a toxin in the ground that wont let other grasses grow? He told me we were better off planting it to beans than corn after taking the rye off because corn is a grass and the toxin will hurt it? I know weve planted corn after the rye before and it grew and was ok yield wise (we chopped it in the fall). When you said you were planting sudan grass I thought maybe you should check into how it might grow after rye. I dont know | |
