That happened to my aunt. She had Alzheimer's but before it got bad enough to have her go into a nursing home a neighbor of hers was there to help her. Now they did take her to her doctors appointments but then that always included a trip to the casino and my aunt never use to go there. My aunt bought them three cars and a computer when they were over $2000 and she even paid for one of the neighbors relatives funeral. She had no children but I have a cousin that lived near her and he tried to help and that neighbor got my aunt to sue him. They had tried to get her to change her will too. My aunt had a live in boyfriend for forty years and he had a lockbox at the bank. He died and had no children. Those people got my aunt to go into that bank and they forged the dead mans signature and took all the money in that box. My aunt at one time described it as having so many hundred dollar bills in it that they couldn't close it. My aunt had money hidden all over the house but it was gone by the time my cousins had to clean everything out. So yes it does happen
