Per the OP, My grandpa used to talk about the days when literally there was no money. Could have bought ground for $50/acre but that was because literally nobody had any money to buy it.
It was before my time but I have been told that one spring during the depression, the local banker came out and asked my great grandfather to farm a quarter of land the bank had taken possession of, rent free just please farm it to keep the weeds down. And he added that if you can make any sort of payment on it in the fall, you can have it. I have never heard what the payment was, but the land is still in our family.
Also, my great uncle told around the same time, they had hogs to slaughter one fall and could not get anything for them. They slaughtered them, themselves and gave a hog to each of their "non Farming" relatives as a Christmas present. When you are struggling and wondering where your next meal will come from and how you will pay for it, I bet that was quite a gift.
I hope we never see times like that again. |
