My point on the above is that essentially, the capital requirements have made it impossible for somebody to "save" their way into agriculture now. They either need to catch a huge break or be born into it.
And for that reason, I believe that the current business model is not sustainable for any more than another generation.
I'm only 54, but the 80's are what really did me in. I've been part time with Dad since then, but those days are very soon over. The biggest challenge for the old timers? Either maintaining the current career path, or making the break to a different one. When the competition (other farmers) depend on growing a finite resource, (land) the transition away from the family farm will continue to escalate until there are very few players. |
