Typically these develop over time due to the amount of chewing we do (functional activities) and also due to clenching and grinding (parafunctional activities). When a significant amount of tooth is lost through fractures, previous fillings, and new decay; a crown is recommended to strengthen the tooth.

I think the above description fits me perfectly. I used to be a Junior High teacher and the clenching and grinding were a big part of my dental issues.
