Subject: Have had better Sundays

Highland Center, in Southeast Iowa

But other people sure had worse ones than we did yesterday. We're very, very fortunate.  Quite an outbreak of storms across our area; most was probably straight line winds, but we believe that what got our shed, a bldg.over a silage pit to the SW of us, neighboring farms to our NE and several sites in and near a small town NE of us likely had a bit of rotation to it.

We had some significant damage to a machine shed, but one couple lost a hog bldg. and several head of hogs, there are missing barns, lots of siding and trees, and one lady who we aren't acquainted with not far from us was critically injured when a building dropped on her.

Very still and calm outside ahead of the storm, then when the wind started suddenly, stuff was flying past our shop from south to north. Hubs was working on a tractor on the slab outside and hurried to move his pickup since stuff was hitting it from the south. When it was all said and done, our machine shed was strung out to the east-northeast. The award for best move in a windstorm went to the gust that apparently lifted the nose (pointed toward the south) of the aluminum livestock trailer high enough that the next gust caught it and gave it a ride 300-350 feet to the east and dropped it on its side in the pasture. It bounced at least once in the corn field and snagged the harrow-gator on the way out.

Looking at what used to be the west end of the machine shed. About 1/3 of the building is missing.

The old livestock trailer didn't fare too well. It traveled about 300 feet in total.
