This may seem silly but have you checked the little claw which moves the leaver on the hydro itself, we had to weld the worn bit up on ours, we were struggling to get 3.5mph out of ours in 2nd, now it does 5. There could be slog in between forward and reverse. Only takes 2 minutes to take it off and check. Hope this helps.
