One thing about chickens. They will go into, (at least ours always have) back into the coup, when the sun starts to go down. We used to free range some, and they would return just as the sun was going down. We quit free ranging after they started disappearing, one by one. Now they have a small yard attached to the coup and they still go back in at dark.

I have no advice in regards to cattle manure management practices.
