I have 2 dogs. One is the best ratter/mouser I've ever had, and the other doesn't really care unless it's a coyote. The ratter is a mutt and the coyote chaser is a purebred Akbash.
If you get them started young and actively help them hunt, with lots of praise for successful kills, pretty much any dog can be a good varmint hunter. They will consider it to be more fun than anything.
