IMO the CIH stalk roll knives do a better job of chopping the stalks but then I haven't owned a JD cornhead since the late '70s. A couple other advantages to the CIH knives is that you can adjust the knive's clearance as they wear. Tley also can be switched from side to side to get more wear, they flip end to end when switched to the opposite side. We run about 1,500 ac of corn per year thru our 1083 & normally run 2-3 years after replacing knives, then flip then and get another year or two out of them. Downside is there are 8 knives per row, Shoup has them priced at $12.95 per knife which is about what we gave last year for CIH knives before sale price.
