Rivers, MB | From what I understand, almost all Manitoba beans move south, even those sold to local elevators. Truck freight is a real issue in getting them south these days and with as far behind as the railways are this year (latest # I read was 50 000 cars), I doubt that many will move east as most of our movement east goes to Thunder Bay by rail. Although last nite I was pondering whether we could truck wheat to Thunder Bay if our producer cars don't show up. I hope I don't draw the short straw to make that trip 7 times.
Estimates I've seen indicate 30% more bean acres in MB alone. Mainly due to poor canola prices and beans perceived as a "cheap" crop to grow. Somewhere in the next few years, we're going to get an early frost or a dry July/August and then we'll see how excited MB is about beans. I'm still dubious about western MB and SK being good bean growing area.
