Subject: RE: Bloated calf help

NW Illinois Stephenson county
In days gone by, I used to get one or two calves (raised holsteins) bloat up weighing 3-400 lbs each year. I would give them penicillin. it never helped, and some would die. So one day when the vet was out, I asked him about it. He said they didn't have to die, that I should shove a tube down their throat to let the pressure out as needed (or else the bloat will suffecate them) and to treat them with something that I don't remember. So the next two that bloated up I treated them as he said, and it worked fine. The reason I don't remember the drug is because after the next two I never had that problem again (20 years or so). So I would suggest that you help ease the pressure with a hose down their throat and call a vet, describe the problem to him, and I would think he would know what drug to use. Good Luck!
