The hide off the her calf is the best and tie it on with sisal twine. I usually just use some cologne or aftershave lotion and rub it on calf and cows nose. I may put the cow in the chute a couple of days and let the calf suck. The smaller the pen the better. My uncle told me a trick just a few days ago is put a dog that will bark at them next to the pen and that will make the cow want to protect the calf.
