12/19/2013 -- Canada's third largest grain handler Cargill Ltd. has begun to expand storage and rail capacity at Viking, Alberta, according to Reuters. The company's Viking facility moves most of its grain by rail to export terminals at North Vancouver and Prince Rupert, British Columbia. The expansion project will raise Cargill's storage capacity by 10,000 tonnes and enable the site to accommodate 100 rail cars at a time, nearly double the current capacity.
Canada's record-sized wheat and canola harvests have limited the ability of rail companies to move crops quickly from country elevators to ports. Cargill expects to complete the Viking expansion by February 2015.
12/19/2013Cargill plans to invest 60 million Euros in a new ethanol facility in Barby, Saxony Anhalt, Germany, according to company announcement on Dec. 17. The new facility will be built alongside Cargill’s existing wheat processing plant on the company’s site in Barby. The plant will produce ethanol by using feedstock from the adjacent wheat facility, using primarily locally grown wheat. Its target markets will be the German and European beverage, cosmetic and pharmaceutical industries.
