Thanks for the responses - I just decided I don't care what the going rate is, and I need $100.00 an hour or I will stay home and work in the shop.
That's probably the best way to do it. You've decided what you want to do the job, and he's free to consider it a fair price and hire you, or free to hire someone else if he doesn't.
All the long involved calculations and explanations still boil down to this simple point.
