Have a friend in the utility bussines. He would cut the wire and bug it together. Then he would stick the bugged end into a tube of 2 part epoxy that proceeded to get as hard as a rock in about 2 min.
Sometimes if no extra wire was available to pull for the splice he would have to cut it in 2 places and use 2 splices.
