It may be that right now second ears on corn plants are not really a factor to consider in yield estimates, but that doesn't mean they should never be considered. I kind of wonder if two good ears is the next step we'll see varieties take toward increasing yield. I've got a popcorn variety growing right now that is supposed to shoot two good ears, and looking at it the other day it appears to have succeeded. We'll see how it yields in a couple months.
Asking about a second ear in this thread may have just been Tara's attempt at putting any kind of bearish spin on the discussion, but I would not recommend blindly turning your back on the possibility of two good ears per plant in the coming years.
