NE Iowa | We always have 2 bulls. They are usually in separate pastures for the summer but run together all winter. The age difference is usually to your advantage. 90% of the time it will work but there is a chance you get 2 that won't get along. Most times a pecking order gets established within a couple days. The worst time of year to keep bulls together is April and May. My 2 can be best friends all winter, sleep in the shed together, and eat out of the same feeder together. But then in the spring when the weather warms up it is like flipping a switch and they can turn on each other. 50 cows is a tough one as far as numbers. Most will say one bull is nowhere near enough but in our area I'm guessing the cows are on less then 50 acres total. One 3-4 year old bull would probably do an adequate job and if you feed out the calves yourself a couple late calves is cheaper then a second bull. Tough call. | |
