They are totally contradictory to natural ventilation. They are pushing the heat, moisture and gases that naturally want to rise back down to cow level. Never tried one for that reason. Prefer high sidewalls ridge vent and traditional fans.


Absolutely correct; the idea behind ventilation in any barn is air exchange. You need to remove the warm moist air out of the barn and replace it with fresh air. We have 52" Norbco fans and they move ALOT of air efficiently. If you want to use sprinklers in the future, you need fans that are blowing air at a good velocity across the cows backs in order to evaporate the water.

I visited a small freestall that had one of those huge fans in it; was not impressed. Dead spots in corners, cows were gathered under fan instead of lying down...in the summer our freestall barn is the most comfortable place to be on the farm. Our production, components and breeding have always remained consistent during hot weather.
