Subject: Re: Big ceiling fans ? [freestall barn]

Thunder Bay, Ontario, Great White North
In my barn I have chimneys for natural ventilation, they can exhaust a lot of stale air and do the job quite well in spring, fall and winter. On a summer day when the 12' curtains are fully open the air moving through the barn with even the slightest breeze will be much more than the chimneys can handle.
Air exchange with the sidewalls open is not an issue in my barn but the speed of the moving air is, that is what the high volume low speed fans are doing - moving air, convection flow of air with my system is only minor on a warm day compared to what flows in and out the walls.
I have chimneys - seven 30" square ones - as opposed to an open ridge because I can control them and prevent the barn from freezing even when it is 40 below outside. My milkers (robots) appreciate that.
That's how it works here.
