Alsace 47°52'46"N 7°24'30"E | My experience with the EZ Steer was that if you did ANYTHING to the steering wheel while it was engaged, it would disengage! Therefore, I cannot understand your statement of 'gently' pushing the steering wheel one way or the other. I guess as said in another comment, that maybe your steering wheel is too worn out to give enough grip to the EZ Steer knob.
Maybe, you should replace your steering wheel, or use a rough sanding paper to give more grip.
Increasing aggressiveness could help too.
If the drift happens just after engaging, I think you should apply stronger rules for engaging (angle, distance)
