" What brand or kind of bits hold up well to drilling mild steel? ". I have good luck drilling mild steel, or even a little harder with common high speed steel(HSS) bits, as long as I keep the drill cool and well lubricated with plenty of "Mistic Metal Mover" Buy it at welding shops like Praxair in qt or gallon cans, apply with a pump oil can. My high speed steel drill sets come from Harbor Freght, 1/64-1/2 inch in a steel case for $10 on sale.
For 9/16-1 inch, I use the HF "silver & demming" 8 piece drill set in the fitted wood case. $30 per set on sale.
With the Harbor Freight drills, well lubed and cooled with mistic metal mover, I have drilled 100+ 1/2 inch holes in 1/2 mild steel and still had a good cutting bit.
I sharpen my own bits, 1/2 and smaller with a drill doctor, and sharpen the larger ones with a bench grinder mounted "General" brand drill sharpener.

The Mistic Metal Mover also makes tapping threads much easier and taps last much longer.
