Subject: Re: nitrogen testing

Central Missouri
Having a preplant test allows me to start thinking in my mind how much sidedress I may need but also how long can my plants be sustained and not lose yield with the current amount of N in the soil. It also lets me see how much N is available in the clay areas and how much is available in the silt loam soils. My silt loams mineralize alot more N than my clays. I would also include in this springs N testing ammonium N as my tests are showing that over 50% of the N we sidedressed last year is still there and 50% of that is in the ammonium form. Same with the N samples coming back from my wheat fields. I will then take a presidedress test and can observe in my mind whether what I suspected should have happened with my N did and that is mainly determined on my soils by the weather between now and then. jmo
