Scottville, 49454 Northwest Michigan | I recently read an article supporting the practice of testing for nitrogen. (Corn and Soybean Farmer, Feb., pg. 30) The idea is to test for nitrogen, and then use that information to adjust the nitrogen rates to be applied. They suggested three tests. Preplant nitrate test, pre-sidedress soil nitrate test, and a fall stalk nitrate test.
My question:
If we're going to sidedress 70 percent of our nitrogen.... and we do a pre-sidedress soil nitrate test to help us manage how much nitrogen to sidedress..... why would we do a preplant nitrate test? What would be the value of doing a preplant test, if we're going to later do a pre-sidedress soil nitrate test?
