They planted the corn seed in mounds and grew beans and squash in between the mounds.  They did not have plows, but they did use slash and burn to clear areas for farming.  I believe that they used fish for fertilizer.  Here is an interesting article with more details:   http://www.nativetech.org/cornhusk/cornhusk.html
