Been there done that . . . . When I had the wheat / soybean rotation, gophers, jack rabbats and wood chuck digging really tilled the field, leaving it too rough after 5-8 yrs. (and of course coyote's / fox, digging out the gophers/rabbats).
I'd pull out the chiesl plow for some spots (hoping, I was deep enough to hit and kill the gophers). Some times the disc was enough, sometimes the field cult.
It was a neccessary part of No-Tilling . . . ..
