Subject: Re: Tillage radishes and soybeans

SE Iowa

This year - for the first time ever - we had a couple situations in beans where herbicide persistence hampered normal progression of several covers...the abnormally dry summer being the culprit.....one case everything died off after emergence....in a couple others there was visible stress that significantly retarded growth....In our experience stand establishment in beans is often affected by a combination of several things - only one of which is sunlight.....this fall we achieved great a initial stand of several different mixes flown into full season, tall, bushy beans weeks before any sign of yellowing...with winter kill covers they did not receive enough sunlight to achieve ideal growth before being killed off....with over wintering covers they faired just fine...but in either case stand establishment was not the issue....
