As Bill Moyer touched on, one thing to remember is that while the plant may not need large amounts of nutrients early in the season, it roots system is much smaller and has harder time running into nutrients so it is important to have a large supply available to for them to find early in the season and most of those nutrients not used early will still be there and available later in the season when uptake ramps up.
