Gordon,

Corn plants do use the majority of their nutrients later in the game just because they get bigger, therefore needing more to sustain themselves. However, that doesn't take away from the fact that some of those nutrients are needed in plentiful supply at the time they germinate and take off. Maybe not so much early, just need a good shot early.
