Subject: Re: 20 in strip till

Berwick, IL
Il corn grower,
We ran 8 inches deep. Had nh3 releasing about 1 inch above bottom of shank. Dry releasing about 3-4 in deep. Gladiator is a 16r30 with a 6 ton montag on top of it, usually 2 nh3 tanks behind, pulled by a 9630 Deere. Had some fields where it struggled to go 5.5 mph. Most corn on corn fields could pull it about 6.5 mph. Had some bean ground where we could go 8, which I throttled back and stayed around 7.5 or slightly below. Gladiator seemed to handle high speeds well when we could get them, but had a lot of variability as to how hard it pulled this year. Our old bar would not work well above 6.5 because it couldn't catch all the dirt and keep it in the strip. Up until this fall we had been running a disk ripper on part of our corn on corn acres. For 2013 we only ripped 20 acres going to corn next to our feedlot where we hauled manure. We did rip some fields that were tiled this fall that are going to beans. Part of that decision was due to better results from corn on corn strips than behind the ripper, part to the dryness. At the moment I am just not feeling any reason to go back to tilling ground going to corn. Like the yield results and better soil structure that we have with strip till but could change our mind if we feel we have an issue with compaction, wet harvest, etc.
